We have been traveling a good bit recently, disrupting my already chaotic routine. Low posting as a result.
When we got back from a trip to Rome (it was lovely and good to be back there after a three-year hiatus), we ordered Chinese, which is our traditional back-from-a-trip meal. I have no idea how we started this tradition, but it has been our thing for twenty years or more.
I ordered combination fried rice. Reader, I did not get that. I got something else — beef and noodles and a lovely dark red-brown sauce. A quick visit to the Intertubes revealed that I was about to eat some Chow Fun. It was really, really good. I loved the chewy noodles, the thin-cut beef, and the sauce was rich and perfect for the meat and the noodles.
So I looked at one of my favorite Chinese cookbooks, Woks of Life, and they have a great recipe for a chicken chow fun. Made it a week after the delivery dinner, and it was most excellent — as are all of the recipes in that cookbook: get it if you like good Chinese cooking: https://thewoksoflife.com/the-woks-of-life-cookbook-now-available/
Sometimes an accidental meal is a revelation. I am so happy that my fried rice went to someone else (I hope they enjoyed it, that restaurant makes it really well), because I learned about a deeply satisfying dish I was not familiar with, and that inspired me to find a recipe and try it for myself.
